Food Trust Night Market at the Gayborhood
Night markets in your neighborhood brought by the Food Trust. A photo essay.
The Food Trust Night Markets are the kind of events that offer a great challenge. Held multiple times a year across different neighborhoods in Philadelphia, they’re packed with people and vendors, all buzzing with energy. These are the kinds of events where you really have to plan ahead—especially if you’re documenting them solo.
Because of the large crowds, it’s best to bring only what you need. In my case, I brought a ladder for a bit of extra height above the crowd, along with one bag packed with essentials to maintain mobility.
The market is also challenging because you’re racing against the light. They’re typically held just before sunset, so you get that prime “golden hour” glow—but if you’re working from a shot list, you have to move quickly before the light fades. Once it’s gone, you’re switching into night photography mode, which brings its own challenges, especially with low light and the risk of motion blur.
